Laser hair removal
Unwanted facial hair on women often appears on the upper lip, chin and sides of the face. Before you decide on the proper removal method first determine that the cause of the hair growth is not hormonal. If you are experiencing an abnormal growth of hair on these facial areas or if the hair is very thick, you should consult your physician to determine the underlying causes before you embark on a removal regimen.
If the hair growth isn’t caused by hormonal abnormalities, you have a number of different options for removal. Sometimes women often choose to tweeze the hairs. Overall, this is not the best solution because repeated plucking can cause irritation in the hair follicle and, on darker-skinned women, can also result in scarring. Unless you have just a few stray hairs that occasionally pop up, save the tweezers for other uses.
Laser hair removal is the newest weapon in the hair removal arsenal. The ideal candidate for laser hair removal has fair skin and dark hair, but good results can be achieved by an experienced laser practitioner on darker-skinned women. Overall, laser hair removal is not very effective on light blonde or white hair.
Long pulse Nd:YAG laser
It is the "newest" hair removal laser. Because its 1064nm infrared beam is poorly absorbed by skin and pigment, it may be safely used in all skin types, including tanned patients. Large spot sizes and fast repetition rates allow large areas to be treated quickly.
Lasers are developed and designed from years of research. The laser parameters are carefully defined by studying the anatomy of the hair follicle and precisely matching the laser light and pulse duration to the follicle size, depth and location to inhibit the re-growth of the hair.
The laser works by disabling hairs that are in their active growth cycle at the time of treatment.
Since other hairs will enter their growth cycle at different times, additional treatments may be necessary to disable all of the follicles in a given area.
- Is laser hair removal painful?
The laser hair removal system uses a precise frequency of light that is finely tuned and optimized to effect only the hair shaft and root. The tissue surrounding the follicle is not irritated by the laser because the system is manufactured to provide the highest degree of accuracy available to maintain the precise frequency of light beam to remove the entire hair root without heating the surrounding skin.
Other laser hair removal systems do not maintain the same level of precision. Even the smallest variations in frequency or duration of the pulse can cause irritation to the skin and possible complications.
As an additional design benefit (since 2006), most laser systems combine cooling mechanisms that dissipates the small level of heat generated by the laser. This makes these lasers the most effective and most pleasant technique available for hair removal.
You will see and feel the real benefits of our techniques after the treatment. Unlike tweezers, chemicals or needles, no irritation occurs after the treatment. The skin is left smooth and silky with minimal side effects.
- How many treatments are necessary? For satisfactory, long-lasting hair removal most patients require three to six treatments. The interval between treatments varies between 4 and 12 weeks, and will depend on your hair color, the type of laser used, and the location treated.
Preoperative Care
1. You should strictly avoid sun tanning and artificial tanning products.
2. You should avoid waxing, plucking or electrolysis of any areas to be treated for at least 6 weeks before your laser treatment.
3. The use of shaving and depilatory creams is allowed.
4. If you have darker skin, you should consider a bleaching cream or skin lightening regimen.
5. You should shave the treatment areas within 24 hours prior to treatment.
6. Anesthetic cream can be applied 30-60 minutes prior to treatment
7. You should remove cosmetics prior to treatment.
Postoperative Changes
1. You will see redness and swelling around the treated hair follicles immediately following treatment.
2. Blisters and crusting are rare, though more commonly seen in darker skinned individuals.
3. Several days after treatment, hair may be extruded from the follicle.
Postoperative Care
1. Immediately following treatment, cold compresses can be applied to the skin surface
2. Emollients and/or topical corticosteroid creams can be used to keep areas moist and reduce redness and swelling.
3. Blisters and crusting are treated with antibiotic ointment and daily soaks.
4. You should strictly avoid the sun in order to prevent pigmentary changes.
